On October 31, 2002, Thursday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 hits Southern Italy, 41.73N and 14.89E. Geologists have hypothesised that an important component of the relative motion between the African plate and Eurasian plate is accommodated on a north-south and left-lateral boundary that passes near the epicentre of the earthquake.

There were 29 people killed at San Giuliano di Puglia, including a teacher and 26 students who were in the cafeteria of a nursery and elementary school for a Halloween party. At least 135 people were injured as a result of the earthquake. 70% of the houses were also damaged in the Campobasso area. Besides that, some ground cracks as well as small landslides were also observed in the area. This earthquake has left thousands homeless.

The Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, went to the quake site after his government declared a state of emergency ensuring that funding was available and the participation of the army in the rescue work and recovery operations.

In mu opinion, since we cannot stop earthquakes from hitting us, we can try researching on the structures of the buildings that were damaged and not damaged. This way, in future, we can build buildings that are just like the buildings that were not damaged and decrease the possibilities of the buildings collapsing. This will also prevent many people from getting injured or even killed because of the buildings collapsing on them.
